A NOTE OF CAUTION

A Thorp (Vice-President) 1956 Q1 Bulletin 002/03 Locations: Blackwater Boats: Firefly

Now the first days of spring are here, members are probably beginning to plan their summer cruises. Whilst I do not wish to dampen any enthusiasm I should like all those who are thinking to extend their dinghy cruising to equip their boats properly.

Last summer two lads sailed a Firefly across the channel with cruising equipment which was admitted to be ‘...far from complete’. This was plain stupid and in my mind courts disaster. Fortunately, last summer, the weather was excellent so they were successful.

When going on a cruise, it is most important to carry good charts and pilot books of the area, an accurate compass and plenty of food (fatigue is an important factor to guard against) so should the occasion arise, you can cope.

I can remember sailing in the Blackwater estuary and suddenly being surrounded by a thick mist but, by knowing my position, I was able to sail to my mooring using a compass. This was not easy to find when visibility was nil, even though I know the area well. Consider what might have happened in mid-channel in similar circumstances without proper gear?

Because not only oneself is concerned but others who may have to risk their own lives through an act of irresponsibility, the essence of seamanship is not to be able to get out of trouble but to avoid it in the first place by good management.
