Sailing Directions

Upnor

The entrance to the Medway lies between the Nore Sand in the north and the Cant Sand in the south; approach from the Thames is through the Nore Swatchway and around Grain Spit. From the Essex rivers, passage is made up Swin, past the Nore Towers, to the Medway Approach Channel. The eastern extremity of the channel is marked by the Medway Pillar Buoy (B.W.V.S. Wh. fl. ev. sec. Bell.) The approach channel, like the river itself, is well buoyed and pilotage presents no difficulty.

The village of Lower Upnor is situated on the starboard side, some eleven miles from the entrance. Thick woods stretch down to the beach and a little way above the Medway Yacht Club is moored the Training Ship Arethusa. Landing can be effected on the concrete hard outside the clubhouse where there are also three slipways down to the low water mark.

Moorings are available, but it is necessary to speak to the M.Y.C. Mooring Master to ascertain which moorings are not in use by their owners at that time. It is also possible to anchor to the east of the club a short distance inside the most inshore trot: this is only possible for shallow draft boats.

At the M.Y.C. there is a fully licensed bar and all normal amenities; meals are also available. Fresh water is available from a tap just inside the compound.

Camping ashore is feasible at several places in the woods on either side of the club grounds.
