READERS’ LETTERS Dear Sir, May I remark on the idea of inspection proposed by the Humber Section?
May I remark on the idea of inspection proposed by the Humber Section?
First of all I should like to say that I am against making them compulsory. I feel, however, that by creating an ideal to be striven for and one which is recognised by a certificate or a burgee we will stimulate an interest in dinghy cruising and improve the capabilities of cruising dinghies. The real reward for achieving a high standard is not the qualification itself but fact that one’s scope is widened. The chances of a successful cruise stimulates enthusiasm for more cruising and so on. The qualification, as I see it, is a method of starting off or assisting this favourable circle of events. In giving this qualification the Association is accepting responsibility for a member’s boat and gear but if the effect is to encourage dinghy cruising then I think we should shoulder it. By accepting this responsibility we put ourselves in a strong position when criticising foolhardy ventures which give dinghy cruising a bad name. Eric Coleman
