THE HANDBOOK
The response to my request for details of landing places was excellent from E. Coast members, good from many scattered members in sailing areas which seem very far away from us, but rather poor from the S. Coast. By supplying some of the latter deficiency myself I was able to rake up a grand total for all areas of fifty-seven.
This is just enough to enable publication of a first edition but there are many big gaps to be filled before the Handbook becomes the asset I had envisaged. The most important gap is on the N.E. coast — no forms at all having been received so far from that group. I hope this is not because the members feel isolated and think that others are not interested in the area — one or two E. Coast members have aspired to cruise up there and may yet manage to do so. Also the Group can hardly hope to include all those dinghy cruising in that area so that publication of landing places will almost certainly draw in a few lone hands who will be as much help to the Group as to the Association. What about it, N.E. Coast?
The gaps next in importance are those on the S. Coast. Nothing has been received from W. of Poole harbour — a stretch of inhospitable coast as far as Axmouth, true, but what about the Cornish havens, also Portland harbour and Lulworth Cove? Poole itself abounds in landing places but we only have two so far. (Christchurch harbour I am sure can offer more than one. How about Yarmouth and the Beaulieu river? Only one has been received from Southampton Water, which is full of fascinating creeks. I hope to get more from Chichester harbour, too. Eastward the coast becomes relatively inhospitable again — but what about the Arun and Rye?
In the E. Coast area the biggest gap is on the Kent coast from which I have received details of only two L.P.’s. Few of our members sail habitually in that vicinity although one or two have a passing acquaintance with it. If they will let me have what details they can remember (even if very sparse), others may be persuaded to try the landing places and to supply the missing information. Nothing has come from the Leigh district or N. of the Walton Backwaters, although I know many members are conversant with these areas. Many such members will be contacted personally but that takes time which could be better utilised on the actual preparation of the Handbook.
Please therefore fill in the form with which we are again pestering you. The book will be published with the details we have now, but it could be greatly amplified and improved with only a little more effort on your part.
