RALLIES
As a result of enthusiasm expressed at the A.G.M. several rallies and meetings are being planned this year. Full details of some of the rallies are given below so that any member taking a holiday in these areas can take advantage of the details given as well as those who plan to come for the weekend.
20th/21st May: River Blackwater, Essex, organised by Charles Stock, Mount Villas, Pleshey, Chelmsford, Essex (Pleshey 280) H.W. Sat. 1030, Sun. 1130 B.S.T. Sunrise 0502, sunset 0852 hrs. Start from Blackwater Sailing Club, Heybridge Basin, Nr. Maldon, who have offered the use of their launching slip and car park. Other launching places in the area — Stone (shingle beach), Bradwell (excellent slip but small charge), Mersea (hard beach), Brightlingsea (very good gentle slope). The club slip is tidal and afloat the following times :-
Friday evening 1930 - 2330hrs Saturday morning 0830 - 1230 Sunday morning 0930 - 1330
Charles Stock will be at the club from Friday evening to welcome members.
Programme: Sat. 0945 hrs take last of flood up to Maldon and back to pick up late arrivals to club jetty. 1230 leave for down river, north of Northey Island, south of Osea Island and on to Stone. If it is lively stop here but otherwise go on to Mersea or Bradwell. 1600 take flood back to Stone or Osea where camping possible on the saltings. Flood to Maldon and back to slip to end with a “jar” at the Jolly Sailor. Charles Stock would appreciate a card if you intend coming, and don’t hesitate if more details are needed to get in touch. Esso chart of Thames Estuary 1/- but not available at all garages.
24th/25th June: Dee Estuary organised by Joan Abrams, Old Hall, Marple, Cheshire (Marple 1191).
H.W. 1225 G.M.T. Sat. Admiralty chart Holyhead - Liverpool, Eastern Sheet shows mouth of estuary but hopelessly inaccurate for the estuary itself. 1” O.S. maps 108 & 100 give a slightly better general picture but all out of date owing to constant silting.
Launching possible near end of Bank Road by about 1030 G.M.T. Weather permitting, sail to Hilbre Island at the mouth of the estuary, a pleasant anchorage, but only a landing below the high tide line as the island is a bird sanctuary — hence no camping. Sunday return as tide permits to Heswall by 1500 G.M.T. If weather poor or people wish to camp, a shorter sail could be arranged returning to Heswall the same day. Car park and food shop at Banks Road, Heswall. Those wishing to crew can be accommodated if they let Joan know in good time. If you intend to come a card to Joan would be appreciated.
