SOUTH WEST GROUP

Bill Powell 1969 Q3 Bulletin 045/02 Locations: Plymouth Boats: Cadet

Activities to date:—

19/11/68 Slide Show of D.C.A. activities given in the lounge of the Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club. Among those present were the Chairman of Torpoint U.D.C., the flag officers of the club, and several members. Much interest was shown. A repeat has been requested at a future date.

15/3/69 A meeting with a ‘mini-display’ and slide show was given at the R.N. Association Club. Among those present were the commodore of the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club, the commodore, rear commodore and members of the Torpoint Mosquito S.C., representatives of the Royal Western Yacht Club of England, the West Hoe Sailing Club, Mr. Worth and Bo’sun, (a new member and cadet member). Discussion took place after the slide show, and the opinion of the meeting was that it would be more advantageous to hold future meetings in a more ‘yachty’ atmosphere. The commodore of the R.C.Y.C. said that he would approach his committee with a view to holding the next meeting there. A date was fixed for May 5th and a room placed at our disposal. The commodore apologised for not being able to attend as he would be away on holiday. Roger Davies and myself were the only persons to turn up. This was unfortunate as interest in the D.C.A. is still being shown. I have been asked as recently as Sunday June 1st by two separate people, “When is the meeting that was talked about at the R.N.A. Club going to take place?”

There is a great potential here for the D.C.A., if properly exploited and publicised. There are many non-racing types who prefer to go places with their boats, and I am confident that a keen group could be got together in the south-west.
