NORTH-WEST GROUP

A rally was held at Glasson on 31 May 69. Four D.C.A. boats were present: Howard and Barbara Gordon were there with their new Topaz Quartus; Alvan Eames sailed his Oyster Morag; Joan and Jan Abrams had brought 18ft. gunter sloop, Eolet from the Dee; and Bill Hines brought his yawl-rigged G.P.14. Members arrived at Glasson on the Saturday morning. Bill Hines launched his boat and went for a sail up the Lune. As she was fairly untried as a sea-boat, he decided to stay in the river. The other three set off rather late on the tide to tack out into Morecambe Bay. Quartus, who was ahead, seemed to be stationary. Eolet went close to investigate and also ran aground, and Alvan decided to join the company. We dried out near No 5 buoy, on a bank in the middle of the marked fairway. After supper the tide came in, and we ran back to Glasson in time for a drink with Bill Hines before he left to drive home. On the Sunday the three remaining boats sailed up river to the pub known as Snatchems, near Lancaster.

This was, therefore, rather an unsuccessful rally from the sailing point of view, but introduced one newcomer to Glasson. Bill decided to join the club there, and has been sailing there a good deal during the summer. Joan Abrams also stayed until the end of July to see more of the local waters.

Eolet is now at Beaumaris, after a fairly rough night passage in the Irish Sea, and it is hoped that some of the Midland members will join us there on 23 Aug 69 for the Gallows Point Rally, when the North-West Venturers Club there will make us welcome.
