SOUTH WESTERN GROUP D.C.A. Report from Bill Powell, Group Sec.
On Sunday August 3rd I had the pleasure of a visit from Joan Abrams and family. Unfortunately the weather was not too pleasant with strong winds, coupled with a very low spring tide, but it was delightful to see them all, and I hope that in spite of everything they enjoyed their day out in Caerdydd.
On Thursday 14th August there was a spontaneous rally: Roger Davies and the Perrins in Our 01, John Deacon and myself in Jady Lane. We sailed from the Yacht Club at Torpoint to pick up Harry Worth in the Sound. Sea Pink could not get up against the tide in the Narrows. We finally clewed up off Cremyll for lunch — and liquid refreshment procured from the Mount Edcumbe Arms!
During the summer season we have been strengthened by the addition of two new members. Mr Eric Russell is a sub-editor of the Western Morning News. He owns a Mirror dinghy, but for his holidays he charters an Alacrity class boat. He was formerly a navigator in the RAF, and at the moment is attending the Navigation School as he is sitting for his ocean-going Yachtmaster’s ticket. He is prepared to give us talks on coastal navigation. The other new member is Mr W. Ravenscroft of Newton Ferrers, and he sails a Dart class boat.
The first winter meeting was held on Wednesday 5th November at the Naval Club, Plymouth. Those present included Roger Davies, Eric Russell, W. Ravenscroft, Geoffrey Underwood (Yachting Correspondent of the Western Morning News) and myself. Many points were touched on, and, by unanimous consent, it was agreed to hold a meeting on the first Wednesday of every month at 2000hrs.
The second meeting was held on Wednesday 3rd December. Roger Davies put on a slide show of some of his cruises. Eric Russell produced a gadget he had made — a simple device for instantly getting the distance off-shore in coastal waters. He was asked to write an article about it for the Bulletin.
The group has, between its members, a pretty comprehensive library of books and charts for loaning each other.
At the January meeting the topic for discussion will be (was?) ‘Rallies for 1970’.
In conclusion, I wish to thank John Deacon, Roger Davies, Ian McCreery, and Joan Abrams for their co-operation, Torpoint M.S.C. for its interest and use of facilities, and the Naval Club for the use of their committee rooms for our meetings.
