AVON RALLY May 1st and 2nd, 1971

Jim Smith 1971 Q2 Bulletin 051/01 Locations: Chester

Because of the closure of Bathurst’s, we were not able to launch at their yard, and launching at the Fleet Inn meant a somewhat shortened trip both ways.

Joan Abrams and crew arrived at the same time as us, and, having launched the boats, we retired to the pub for a drink and to await the arrival of John Deacon and any others who might have launched elsewhere. John arrived later, without boat, having had a trailer failure near Oxford.

After a little shuffling about by car, John was able to sail to Strensham with us, and we all set off about 14.15. The weather was excellent, and although the temperature was not high, it was bright and sunny with clear skies.

We had a pleasant leisurely sail up to Strensham, arriving nicely in time for tea. After tea we readied the boats for the night. Joan, John and I went off to the local in Eckington where we were joined for a pleasant evening by John Henderson and family. Joan and I returned to the boats about 10 p.m. whilst John returned home by road.

Sunday’s weather was a repeat of Saturday’s, and after a leisurely breakfast we meandered back to the Fleet, where we recovered the boats at about 12.30. We were joined for a lunch-time drink by John and Bill Henderson, whilst a prospective member turned up to have a look at the boats.

Leaving Joan to cook her lunch, I pulled out for home at about 14.00 A short quiet leisurely rally, but I think it was enjoyed by all.
