North West Area Rally at Ullswater 5/6 September 1981

Unknown author 1981 Q4 Bulletin 093/07 Locations: Ullswater

While Peter Filschie was reaching across Ullswater with the spray breaking across Tarka, a procession of boats was leaving Manchester. Unfortunately I was repeatedly breaking down. Eventually Brian Shea, Stewart and Jenny Morris, Colin Bell and I arrived at Waterside Farm with white horses spotting the lake. Mike Clarke, after joining the Filschies, had sailed back to his mooring. We made lunch, and James Proud came over for a chat. After lunch the wind dropped and everyone launched. George Ellis sailed with Colin and James in Tarka.

In the evening we met up in the garden of the pub in Pooley Bridge. The NW Area sinking fund stands at £3.21. Sunday dawned absolutely Harry Flatters with a mist reducing visibility to a mile. The luggers motored down to Glenridding whilst the unmotorised drifted to Kailpot Bay. In the afternoon the sun came through the cloud and we finished up sailing. The final pleasure was tea with the Morrises before setting off with fingers crossed for the motorway.
