LONDON RIVER LAUNCHING SITES 2. Teddington to Tower Bridge, North Bank

For the general preamble to this water see the previous article on the south bank. Note particularly the warning about parking a car on roads near the river, unless yours is amphibious, though even then you may need to put out an anchor! Because of the flood defences, the lowest point on this bank that one can launch off wheels is at Chiswick Mall. Below that, there are only stairs.

167714 Teddington. There is a slip at the bottom of the garden of The Anglers, entrance in Broom Road, that can serve for very light craft for patrons.

168715 Teddington. Any craft that can be carried over the footbridge to the lock island can be launched from the beach there. Parking in Ferry Road.

165733 Twickenham DD. Bottom of Church Lane. My own favourite access point. Picturesque and convenient in all ways.

167733 Twickenham. In front of the White Swan, Riverside. A concrete slip is overhung by a low tree, but there is a wide, slightly stepped bank of easy gradient to the water. Parking in road.

168733 Twickenham Ferry. Bottom of Ferry Road. The ferryman still plies in the season, but you can use the slip while he is over the other side. Parking in road.

177745 Richmond Bridge DD. On upper side of bridge. Easy parking out of hours. This, like all the above, gives access to 3½ miles of pleasant S-shaped river, mostly rural.

166757 Isleworth. Shrewsbury Place leads to a rough access point behind Isleworth Ait.

167761 Isleworth DD. Church Road, by the London Apprentice. Wide slip to extensive hard at low water and a fine reach between the half-tide lock and Kew Bridge. The pub is popular, so the slip can get obstructed by the drinkers’ cars in pub hours.

191779 Kew Bridge DD. Strand-on-the-Green. The recent concrete raising has left a 6 inch step on the river side that needs chocking with driftwood if you are not to scrape your silencer. Parking in road.

197775 Grove DD. Strand-on-the-Green. West end of Grove Park Road. Parking in single-yellow road out of hours.

216778 Chiswick. Disused ferry slip at bottom of Church Street. Parking tight in immediate vicinity. See next.

217779 Chiswick Mall. Wide, easy access behind Chiswick Eyot to splendid reach of open river. Parking in road easy out of hours.

231782 Hammersmith DD. Queen Caroline St. Now closed with barrier of removable, horizontal planks. Light craft can be handed over. Extensive hard at low water.

240760 Fulham Palace stairs. Mentioned because they are there. No point in using them.

243758 Swan DD stairs. End Fulham High Street. The draw-dock is now blocked but stairs lead down to the hard. Parking in road out of hours.

253755 Broomhouse DD. End Broomhouse Lane SW6. No flood barrier here, but high railings with firmly locked gate. Why?

267774 Beaufort Stairs, Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. Steps opp. Kings Arms with 3-4 ft flood barrier leads to hard among the house boats. Parking in side roads out of hours.

272776 Cricketers’ Stairs, Cheyne Walk.

277777 Yorkshire Grey Stairs, Chelsea Embankment.

282778 Chelsea College Stairs, Chelsea Embankment. All three are iron grating stairs, suitable for very light craft only. The first leads to a hard beach at low water.

290779 William IV stairs. Grosvenor Road, Pimlico. Light portable craft only. Parking in road out of hours.

303788 Millbank Stairs. Near Tate Gallery. Steps up, through open, low gate and down to hard at low water. If it gets too wet for boating, you can go and look at the paintings. Parking in road out of hours.

304800 Whitehall Stairs at RAF Memorial, Victoria Embankment. Low, locked gates and flood barrier give onto stone stairs.

306805 Adelphi Stairs at Cleopatra’s Needle. Open access through chicane, 3 ft barrier to 15 ft wide stairs.

312808 Temple Stairs, Victoria Embankment. Open access through chicane, 3 ft barrier to wide stairs.

317808 Blackfriars Bridge Stairs. Now only a vertical iron ladder under the road bridge, suitable only for embarking and disembarking.

321808 St. Paul’s Stairs (one-time Trig Lane). New, narrow wooden staircase leads down to wide beach at low water by the City Heliport barge. Parking out of hours.

325807 Cousin Lane Stairs. Alongside Cannon Street Station. Wide steps up and down at end of very narrow lane by the Bouncing Banker pub.

328806 London Bridge Stairs. Weird, these. Built into the underworks of the new bridge, on the downstream side like a set from a James Bond film. Narrow, light craft only.

335805 Custom House Lower Stairs, off Lower Thames Street. Fairly wide stairs with open access. Parking in road out of hours.
