BITS AND PIECES
A Safety Harness:
To make a cheap harness, acquire a 1981 Practical Boat 0wner, issue no. 176. See Page 45. I have made two of these and they work. Read F. Dye’s book.
A book new to me I have bought, Dinghy Cruising, by Philips, a husband and wife team in Canada. 20 years’ experience of the Great Lakes and Wayfarers. £2.50. Got mine from: M Gale, Flat 2, 75 Holland Park, London, W11 3S1
Lilos — the use of:
I remember an article by John Deacon, I think, where he gave up on them: either too hard or too soft. A guide for you — pump up and then place your extended hand in the middle of the Lilo. If you can press it to the floor, that’s about right. Your body will warm the air inside to make it comfortable. Plastic ones are cheaper and don’t soak up any damp.
Having bust my tiller last season on a lee shore — “Cor, shame!” — and coming home on a lash-up rig (a bit of driftwood off the foreshore) I had a thought, “The boom crutch is made of hardwood.” So I have shaped one end to fit the rudder stock. Now, if need be, unbolt the crutch and we have a nice tiller, ready made. (Rule of the Game — two uses for all gear carried!).
Good Sailing!
