NORTHERN IRELAND SECTION
On Sunday, 17 January 1988, the first DCA event to be held in Northern Ireland took place. Michael Green of Ballymena phoned Jack Boland of that illustrious town and asked him to crew in his Mirror 16 that day. Jack agreed!
Some two hours later as they rowed in a f1 out of the Sixmilewater River onto the Lough, Jack asked, “What are all these boats doing?” It was then that Michael informed him that they had entered for the club Sunday race held by the Antrim Boat Club. “Didn’t I mention this when I phoned?” Michael asked innocently. Jack did not seem to be over-impressed with the information, but as they were rowing hard to make the start-line, and he was only the crew member/dogsbody, he kept quiet — for a change!
As Michael, assisted by Jack, demonstrated to about two dozen other boats in the race that DCA members were tactically superior, a discussion evolved. Jack suggested that cruising was more relaxing — as he opened his flask of soup! The idea of a Northern Ireland summer programme was born under these cool (icy) conditions. We dreamed of warmer days cruising in company.
The following Wednesday night a programme was drawn up for the Northern Ireland Section (see Rallies Programmes attached). We need 100% support, as we only have five members! All other DCA members and their friends are most welcome. Any suggestions or advice on additional meetings would be appreciated.
