SECURITY OF TRAILERS
In the winter Bulletin a member wrote to the editor asking for information regarding what to do with the trailer whilst away sailing. I hoped that it would result in a flood of suggestion, but unfortunately the spring Bulletin has come and gone. No gems of knowledge have appeared, so my meagre offerings must suffice. Below is a number of ideas. One can use as many of them at a time as one has inclination for. There is no doubt that a determined thief can probably succeed whatever one does, but this must be kept in perspective. One should not allow fear of theft to spoil ones pleasures but one should take reasonable precautions to make it difficult for the thief as many thefts are committed on impulse.
1. Paint the trailer in a distinctive/unpleasant colour or pattern.
2. Padlock it to the car using heavy chain, at least 3/8” plus the best padlock that you can afford. It should not be possible to slide the chain off either vehicle after unbolting some part, although it still remains a deterrent, even if this is not feasible.
3. Use a patent device to prevent the hitch being disconnected from the ball on the car. Several types are available. Visit caravan centres as well as chandlery shops in your search. 4. Fit a security wheel clamp. An improved model at a price is available from Safe and Secure Products, Chestnut House, Chestnut Court, Mangotsfield, Bristol BS17 3JZ.
5. Leave your car and trailer in a marina with car parking facilities. The charge for one launch and recovery normally includes parking. If the aforesaid operations take place on different days there may be an extra charge: there shouldn’t be if you don’t ask! Marina charges for use of the launching ramp vary enormously. The sleekest four in the Hamble varied by 400% when I inquired last year. Don’t let one high price put you off.
The best single solution in my opinion is the marina, particularly if the compound is locked at night. By definition they are going to be thin on the ground around some of the best cruising waters however. Even in a marina I always fit a hitch lock. In future I shall be considering the wheel clamp in addition.
If anyone has any further ideas on the subject please drop me a line and I will incorporate them in future notes for the Bulletin. All hints will be acknowledged. I should also be interested in details of actual thefts, attempted thefts, tampering or vandalism.
