HOT TIP

Here’s a ‘hot tip’ that could save you pounds in Gaz bills over the years. I mentioned it casually at one of our meetings thinking that everyone knew about it and was surprised that no-one there did.

Use a food flask for cooking rice, pasta etc. All you do is boil a kettle, put the rice in the flask with a little salt, pour on the water and seal it. After about an hour, it’s done. Much cheaper and simpler than boiling it for 15 minutes.

I’ve found an hour is right for brown rice, the sort I like best, but which normally takes a long cooking time. You may prefer a quicker rice and find you need less time in the flask, so experiment at home to get your times right for your particular quantities. It cuts down on your Gaz consumption, frees you to do other things instead of watching the pot, and generally means that a meal cooked on a single burner is easier to produce.

Bon appetite!
