FASTER RUNNING
An alternative way to rig a ‘cruiser chute’ or ‘loafer’ is to make fast the clew to the mast at deck level, and fix the sheet to the tack of the sail. The main, sheeted in a little, spills wind around the mast straight into the loafer, which usually sets without the need for a pole. Anyone with a cutter rig on a heavy and stable boat will find it easiest to hoist the sail when heaved to under mainsail and stays’l. There is no need to attach the sheet until the sail is fully hoisted. This avoids twist. When all is ready a gybe will fill both main and loafer. The stays’l can be left up, ready for heaving to again at the end of the run.
