DCA Single-Hander
The response that I have received from members has demonstrated that everyone would like something different in this design. The only feature that was universally considered important besides stability was reasonably light weight to make handling ashore easier. As intimated in a previous bulletin, it is not considered possible to incorporate all the Roamer's desirable qualities in a 12 foot boat.
Rather than set up a special project therefore, I discussed the matter with Paul Fisher and he has a recent design which appears to suit most requirements. He sails it at Chichester with his family and it is called the Stornaway 12. The dimensions are 12' 1" x 5' x 6"/3' 3" - sail area 78 sq ft.
Selway Fisher Design can modify it at minimal or no cost to suit most requirements. With its short spars and moderate beam it should row well - in fact one can buy the plans for just a rowing version if required. It can be built with or without decking, space for sleeping etc.
The construction can be clinker ply, strip planked or stitch and glue; all methods giving a shapely round bilged hull. Of course the rig can be altered as well. What is more, there is a builder who will quote for complete or partly built Stornaways as well as panel kits.
