The Wanderer Dinghy
It was interesting to hear at Sailboat '94, that many owners who use these dinghies at sea have been asking for a steel centreplate to give additional stability. Ian Proctor did prepare drawings of a suitable plate and due to the number of these requests, this is now available from the present manufacturer, Anglo Marine. The price which includes strengthening the centreboard case is £375.00 inclusive of VAT. The plate weighs 85 lbs., somewhat more than a Roamer's. It doesn't take the dinghy out of class from a racing point of view as the wooden board can be replaced if required. Whilst it does not make the dinghy self-righting as the shape of the hull and buoyancy location are against this, it does make the Wanderer very difficult to capsize and only minimal pressure on the centreboard is required to bring it upright again. We can only hope that other class associations and manufacturers of hybrid racing/day sailers, most of which are somewhat less stable than the Wanderer, will also see the light. It would be nice to see these offering similar modifications to make their dinghies safer for cruising; particularly as this amount of weight can have only a minor effect on the craft's performance.
