BAWDSEY HAVEN YACHT CLUB near Woodbridge, Suffolk

Unknown author 1995 Q1 Bulletin 146/09 Locations: Alde, Bawdsey, Deben, East Coast, Woodbridge

This is a new yacht club that is to be based on the former Royal Air Force Sailing Association’s premises at Bawdsey close to the mouth of the Deben. This is part of Bawdsey College’s plan to open up facilities to local people when feasible. While yacht clubs are not of general interest to our members, this could be different as the central idea of this club is to encourage safe enjoyment of the locals waters for those whose primary interest is not in racing but rather in travelling from place to place in boats, whether on a day trip upriver on a picnic or along the coast for a week’s camping. It could thus be of great interest to East Coast members as a base. It is expected that there will be sailing courses and courses in boat building held at the club.

We hope that DCA members will be able to launch there even if they are not Bawdsey members. There will be a launching slip and parking facilities.

The new club itself will be launched on Sunday 21st May at 1pm and everyone who is interested is invited along. If you have a boat you are welcome to bring it by land or sea. The idea is to sail round locally and be seen, maybe offering other people a sail if the conditions are right. It happens to coincide with the weekend of the Alde rally but there is no reason why one could not take it in on the way home from the Alde, whether sailing or trailing. One of our members is on the steering committee and Graham Wadeson lives locally and will keep in touch with progress. It would be best to contact him if you have any queries at 0394 383082.
