LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Joan,
The present trend towards lightweight boats is perhaps understandable. Advantages like ease of construction using marine ply and epoxy systems, resulting in a lighter hull which is easier to trail and handle ashore are obvious. However, I am sceptical of the stability of such boats in heavier wind and sea conditions.
Members of the DCA who share my views and prefer a heavier traditional boat will find John Leather's designs of interest. I am building a 12' clinker dinghy - sketch enclosed - one of John's designs, which not only looks right but will hopefully sail right!
Anyone contemplating building a traditional clinker boat should first read John Leather's book: Clinker Boatbuilding, published by Adlard Coles. Every stage of lofting and building is clearly described.
