A Plockton Launching Site

(correct summer 1996). O.S.Sheet 24. Adm.Chart 2209

From my log book: 24.7.96. Explored on foot the foreshore to look at all possible launching spots. Rejected the smart one at SW end as too busy with trippers and parking ‘regulated’ (but not charged for). Rejected ‘Pier’ (stone slip) at the NE end as too busy with fishermen, tripper boats and sightseers. A resident advised us to look at a spot ‘by the big green shed’ which turned out to be the local dinghy sailing club’s venue at NGR 807337. Can be reached on foot from the main street across the causeway but I did not record directions for car. We launched at half tide, without difficulty across hard clean shingle and parked car and trailer nearby out of the way. No charges for anything. Rowed around to the little drying inlet at 807339 for the night. Local told us that Plockton Regatta on this weekend — to be avoided! Bought Plockton tide tables (produced by Plockton Small Boat Sailing Club) from well stocked grocers. Filled our 3 gallons water at Village Hall tap but there should be a tap at the dinghy sailing club.

Plockton is beautiful. Draws masses of tourists by road and rail and sea. In 1996 the TV series ‘Hamish Macbeth’ was accentuating the congestion but it may have eased now. Members have also launched into Loch Carron from the Strome Ferry slip but that is a few miles downwind west of Plockton.
