One More Time — or how to sail the dinghy ashore after a capsize
This method can be used on a dinghy with rear buoyancy, like a Mirror.
Right the boat, get the crew aboard and to work with bucket to bail out the water. Skipper gets to the transom, hooks left arm over the transom and right arm over the tiller head. Assuming rear sheeting, hold mainsheet in left hand, pulls in gently and with a bit of luck sails the boat to shore. Several ifs and buts here — shore assumed to be not far away, crew will need to balance the boat and bale out spare water — and one last thing, the power of the water when you do get moving is quite something, Expect to lose your shorts and possibly your shoes etc. When the boat is moving and you are hanging on to rudder and transom, the rest of you will be floating out like a flag with the water power. How do I know all this? I have done it and it works. It was a recommended method I read yonks ago. Much better than waiting to be rescued.
