BOOK REVIEW Chichester Harbour - A History by John Reger. Phillimore & Co Ltd of Chichester (£13.95)
Did you know there used to be an ‘East’ Itchenor between Dell Quay and Birdham, that East Head used to extend much further west and was the original Spit Head, or that Harold sailed from Bosham to Normandy in 1061?
These interesting facts, and many more, take us through from the end of the last Ice Age to the present day. The author describes the characters who lived there and the industries that grew up on its shores, the commercial shipping, the boat builders, the histories of the various landmarks, the many mills, some still standing, some long vanished, and wonderful photographs, sketches and maps of times long gone.
Any one who sails regularly in Chichester Harbour will see the landscape in a new light after reading this book. Liz Baker
