Finland Raid

Unknown author 2002 Q2 Bulletin 175/15a Locations: Newcastle Boats: Europe

Michael Hanyi in Finland (not a DCA member) contacted the DCA about Raid Finland, this July, which he thought might be of interest to our members. All the info can be found on a fine website:- www.puuvene.net/raidfinland/

This 'raid' is following on the 'tradition' of Douro and Great Glen raids. Pity Finland is so far away – looks like great d'c'ing country and HE claimed the midges were not all that much of a problem!

In Bulletin 174 it was suggested that there is a problem with mosquitoes in Finland. I have been afloat in both the 'Thousand Lakes' of central Finland and the 'Thousand Islands' in the south without experiencing any insect problems. (Lapland is the area with mosquitoes!) The mid-summer weather was excellent, and with sunshine 23 hours per day, bathing in the shallow lakes was as warm as on the equator. I would rate Finland as the most civilised and cultured country in Europe, except for the occasional drunk. Of course trailing a boat to Finland would be time-consuming and expensive (Newcastle-Malmo, Malmo-Helsinki ferries?) but a boat swap may be possible. (Try <johan.kock@kvkock.pp.f>)
